Nokian Rotiiva AT XL's are all-weather tires that offer great performance in just about any terrain a Vanagon driver travels. They perform excellently as an everyday tire on asphalt and sport an aggressive tread pattern, making them suitable for light off-road use. The XL rating stands for extra-load, which means that they handle a fully loaded Van easily and still give that quick response to steering corrections that inspires confidence. Rotiiva AT's also hold the "Severe Service Emblem," indicating that they meet snow traction requirements set by the Rubber Association of Canada. You can see this indication on the sidewall of the tire, designated as a snowflake inside a mountain peak. The Rotiiva AT contains an additional snowflake symbol on the center of the tire tread that acts a safety indicator. As long as the 4 millimeter snowflake symbol remains visible, your tread is deep enough to safely handle Winter driving conditions. If you live in, or plan on visiting, a snowy region make sure your vehicle is equipped with safe tires that meet Winter driving requirements. In fact, many highways and mountain passes require Winter tires or snow chains and impose hefty fines on drivers.
The Silica compound used in these tires provides excellent grip, longer mileage, and better rolling resistance while maintaining winter properties. The Arrowhead Tread Pattern (directional) and unique tread positioning effectively expels water, snow, and slush while providing uncompromised lateral grip. Info pin can inform the driver of road conditions based on outside air temperature surrounding the tire. Jointless Nylon belt helps prevent tread separations while providing a smooth, comfortable ride.
Green Tires - Nokian Tires use only purified oils in the tire production–no toxic or carcinogenic chemicals–all without compromising the grip and safety of the tires.

Some info about tires.
The general trend in the last few years is toward larger wheels with lower profile and wider tires. Until 20 years ago, only sports cars had original equipment wheels larger than 15 inches. The last decade has seen increasing wheel sizes on many average vehicles like SUVs and minivans. Those wheels and the lower profile tires they use offer better cornering and stability and are important for vehicles with higher horsepower engines.
Reasons to use smaller wheels and higher profile tires;
- cheaper tires
- better pothole resistance and off road performance
- quieter softer ride
- lower risk of aquaplaning
Reasons to use larger wheels and lower profile tires;
- better cornering
- more stopping traction
- sharper response in an emergency
- lower engine rpm
- larger wheel allows for larger brakes
For a Vanagon, we believe the middle of the range in tire profile and in all around performance would be a 65 series. Higher profiles (70 and 75 series) offer a softer ride and possibly better off-road performance while lower profiles (60 and 55 series) tend to better handling and stopping.
