Fits all years of Vanagons, 1981-1991 2wd and Syncro
The stock Vanagon brakes are just adequate if you have a 2wd passenger van with stock tires and good pads and shoes. If you have a Syncro, a Westy or especially a Syncro Westy with upgraded wheels and tires, your brakes are just not good enough for emergency stops. The upgraded front brakes are great but in a Vanagon the rear carries a lot of weight and so the rear brakes do a large amount of the work in stopping the van. With the installation of these vented rear discs, the braking goes from passable to amazing!
In the words of a recent customer "I may be exaggerating how much better it feels, but my original brakes (on my Westy) just felt unsafe. Now the brakes are awesome."
This rear disc brake kit comes with all the parts necessary to upgrade your Vanagon's rear brakes, greatly enhancing fade resistance and shortening high speed stopping distance.
This kit uses a US model VW-Audi caliper and rotor so replacement parts are available now and should be available well into the future.
Installation requires machining the stock Vanagon hubs to fit the inside rotor diameter. Most automotive machine shops can perform this service or we can for $125 per pair. Syncro will require one 2wd parking brake cable for installation of the passenger side parking brake.
Minimum 16" wheels are required. The rotors are 4mm thicker than the Vanagon drums so the rear track is increased by 8mm. You also lose 4mm of stud length which should not be a problem unless your studs are already too short because of thicker wheels.
When fitted to a Vanagon that has had the front brakes upgraded with our dual piston front discs the brake balance is excellent with the stock proportioning valve in place.
|We use these to replace the stock rear studs to gain 10mm thread length, enough for most optional wheels. Their effective length 44.5mm compared to the stock 34.5mm.|
